Policy

Gorilla trekking is a unique and sensitive wildlife experience, requiring strict guidelines to ensure the safety of both visitors and mountain gorillas. This policy outlines the essential rules and best practices for responsible gorilla trekking, aiming to protect endangered gorilla populations and support sustainable tourism.

Permits & Group Size: Each participant must obtain a valid gorilla trekking permit before entering the park. Permit numbers are strictly limited to minimize disturbance and ensure a safe, manageable group size—typically no more than 8 trekkers per gorilla family per day.

Health & Hygiene: Visitors must be in good health. Anyone with contagious illnesses, such as the flu or cold, will not be allowed to trek, as gorillas are highly susceptible to human diseases. Hand sanitation is required before starting the trek.

Behavior in the Forest: Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (about 23 feet) from the gorillas at all times. Loud noises, sudden movements, and direct eye contact should be avoided to prevent distressing the gorillas. Eating, drinking, or smoking near gorillas is strictly prohibited.

Photography & Interaction: Photography is permitted, but flash must be disabled. Physical contact with gorillas is not allowed under any circumstances. Trekkers must remain together as a group and follow the guide’s instructions at all times.

Time Limit: Time spent with gorillas is strictly limited to one hour to reduce stress and the risk of disease transmission.

Environment & Conservation: Do not litter or leave any waste in the forest. All trekkers should respect the natural environment and avoid damaging vegetation. Support conservation efforts by following all park rules and respecting local communities.

By adhering to this gorilla trekking policy, visitors help protect mountain gorillas and contribute to the long-term sustainability of ecotourism in Rwanda.
